ભારતમાં ભગવાન શિવ ના અનેક મંદિર છે. ગુજરાતનું સ્તંભેશ્વર મહાદેવ મંદિર પોતાના એક અનોખા ચમત્કાર માટે પ્રખ્યાત છે. હકીકતમાં, ભગવાન શિવનું આ મંદિર દિવસમાં બે વાર પોતાના ભક્તોને દર્શન આપ્યા બાદ સમુદ્રના ખોળામાં સમાઈ જાય છે. આ ખાસ મંદિર ગુજરાતના કાવી-કંબોઈ ગામમાં આવેલું છે. જે ભરૂચ નજીક છે. આ ગામ અરબ સાગરના મધ્ય કેમ્બે બેટ પર છે. આ ચમત્કારી મંદિર સવાર અને સાંજે, દિવસમાં બે વાર નજર આવતું નથી.
શિવજી તેમના ભક્તોને દર્શન આપ્યા બાદ આ મંદિર સમુદ્રમાં લુપ્ત થઈ જાય છે. કહેવામાં આવે છે કે, આ મંદિર કોઈના પ્રાયશ્ચિતનું પરિણામ છે, જેનો ઉલ્લેખ શિવપુરાણમાં પણ મળે છે. આ જ કારણે તે ગાયબ થઈ જાય છે.
શિવપુરાણ મુજબ, તાડકાસુર નામનો એક શિવ ભક્ત અસુરે ભગવાન શિવને પોતાની તપસ્યાથી પ્રસન્ન કર્યા હતા. બદલામાં શિવજીએ તેને મનોવાંછિત વરદાન આપ્યું હતું. જેના અનુસાર, તે અસુરને શિવપુત્ર ઉપરાંત કોઈ મારી શક્તુ ન હતું. જોકે, એ શિવ પુત્રની ઉંમર પર માત્ર 6 દિવસની હોવી જોઈએ. આ વરદાન મેળવ્યા બાદ તાડકાસુરે ત્રણ લોકમાં હાહાકાર મચાવી દીધો હતો. તેનાથી પરેશાન થઈને તમામ દેવતા અને ઋષિ મુનિઆઓએ શિવજીને તેનો વધન કરવા અપીલ કરી હતી. તેની પ્રાર્થના સાંભળ્યા બાદ શ્વેત પર્વત કુંડથી 6 દિવસના કાર્તિકેય ઉત્પન્ન થયા. કાર્તિકેયે તાડકાસુરનો વધ કર્યો હતો. પરંતુ બાદમાં તે અસુર શિવભક્ત હોવાનુ જાણ થતાજ તેઓને બહુ શરમ અનુભવાઈ હતી.
